Buzkashi Boys

A coming of age story of two young Afghan boys who are struggling with the decision as to whether they should follow their dreams or in their father’s humble footsteps. Nominated for a 2013 academy Award, this short narrative film was supported by the Afghan Film Project, an NGO set up to train and mentor Afghan film makers. The film was directed by Sam French, who lived in Kabul for five years and produced and directed documentaries for the UN, NGOs, aid agencies and media organisations including HBO, BBC, CNN, Channel 4 News and Al Jazeera. Buzkashi Boys was filmed entirely on location in Afghanistan, and was nominated for an Academy Award in 2013.  The film’s producer, Leslie Knott will host the evening and be available to answer questions.

Gardeners of Kabul

Five hundred years ago, the Emperor Babur laid out beautiful gardens in the city of Kabul. The lush, green spaces provided a peaceful retreat when he returned from battle. Over the centuries, the emperor's favourite garden was battered by war, but has now been lovingly restored to its former glory. In this film, we meet the gardeners keeping the emperor's legacy alive and we're invited into the private gardens of Afghans who find refuge among their plants and flowers from the stresses of a violent city.Award winning photojournalist, writer and filmmaker Lalage Snow has covered the Middle East and Afghanistan since 2007, making Kabul her home for over five years. In 2013 Lalage produced, filmed, directed and narrated ‘The Gardeners of Kabul’ and will attend the event.
